About the Course

Renewed Recovery is an 8 module course with 1 module per week. The course will take 2 months to complete. Each module is described below.
Module 01: Automatic Pilot and Relapse
The general theme of the first module is automatic pilot, which is defined as acting without awareness. How automatic pilot relates to relapse is that when individuals experience cravings to drink or use, they often engage in reactive behaviors, acting on them without full awareness of what just occurred and what the consequences may be. Mindfulness comes in to the lesson by using it to bring awareness to the tendency to engage in automatic pilot, and then learn ways to begin shifting from habitual, often self-defeating behavior, to observing what is happening in their minds and bodies without automatically reacting. The primary intention of this first lesson is to introduce the major topics of the intervention and to begin discriminating between automatic versus mindful awareness.
Module 2: Awareness of Triggers and Craving

The central theme of the second module is recognizing triggers and experiencing them without automatically reacting. The theme is carried out through the module by learning to identify triggers and observe how they often lead to a chain of sensations, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By using mindfulness, we can bring this process into awareness, disrupting automatic reactive behaviors and allowing greater flexibility and choice.

Module 3: Mindfulness in Daily Life
The central theme in the third module is to circle back to the central idea of using mindful meditation to increase awareness. The simplest way to do this is to focus on your breath to ground you in the present. With this presence and awareness, we are often less reactive and can make decisions from a stronger, clearer space.
Module 4: Mindfulness in High Risk Situations

The theme of module 4 is focusing on staying present in challenging situations that have been previously associated with substance use or other reactive behaviors.

Module 5: Acceptance and Skillful Action

The theme of module 5 is finding balance between accepting whatever arises and encouraging healthy or positive action. Fighting against things we cannot control (i.e. situations that happen, emotions that arise, other people’s behaviors and actions) it may lead to feelings of frustration, anger, or defeat, which can be triggers for alcohol or substance use. When we accept the present as it is, it is not being passive, it is allowing what is already occurring without resistance. This is often a necessary first step towards change.

Module 6: Seeing Thoughts as Thoughts
The theme of module 6 is seeing thoughts as just words or images in the mind that we may or may not choose to believe.
Module 7: Self-Care and Lifestyle Balance

The theme of module 7 is to take a step back and look at the broader picture of life to identify aspects that support healthier, more vital life and aspects that put people at greater risk.

Module 8: Social Support and Continuing Practice

The theme of the final session is understanding the longevity of recovery and mindfulness practices. Another important aspect of recovery practices is social support.
